Immanuel
is part of a voluntary association of independent congregations called The
Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. These congregations share a common confession
of faith, as well as common goals for ministry and cooperative work.
With
the universal Christian Church, The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod teaches and
responds to the love of the Triune God: the Father, creator of all that exists;
Jesus Christ, the Son, who became human to suffer and die for the sins of all
human beings and to rise to life again in the ultimate victory over death and
Satan; and the Holy Spirit, who creates faith through God's Word and
Sacraments.
Lutheran
churches arose almost 500 years ago when Christians sought to return the church
to the teachings of Jesus and His first disciples. The issues on which the
“reformation” focused can be summarized in three short phrases: Grace alone,
Faith alone, Scripture alone.
GRACE
ALONE, FAITH ALONE, SCRIPTURE ALONE
God
loves the people of the world, even though we, through our behavior, have failed
to live up to his standard for our lives. In fact, the more honestly we look at
our lives, the more we come to know that we deserve nothing but God's anger.
But God sent Jesus, His Son, to save and reunite us to Him. The Bible says,
"God shows his love for us in this; while we were still sinners Christ
died for us." We are saved by grace alone.
By
His suffering and death Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life
for all people of all times. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have
the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in us and gives people
forgiveness through Jesus. We receive this grace through the blessing of His
Word and the sacraments. We receive God's gifts by faith alone.
The
entire Bible is God's inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His Law
and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the only way we discover
God’s plan for our lives. God reveals himself to us through scripture alone.
WHO
IS JESUS?
For
more than 2,000 years people have asked the question, "Who is
Jesus?". We were not present when Jesus lived on this earth, but in the
Bible we have the record of his birth, life, death on the cross, and
resurrection. Study of the Bible, God's Word, will enable you to seek out the
answer to this age-old question. But be careful - it is an answer that will
challenge you to respond!
